I began this painting years ago, but it really came into its own in 2020.
It sat for ages in my studio, and there was just something about it that didn’t sit well with me. Then one day i just looked at it, and began to paint over it with a dark green paint. I scraped at the wet paint with my nails and what emerged is a message.
The challenges and stresses of 2020 have affected us all, and for me, the only way to make sense of it all has been my Christian faith and understanding that the events happening around me have prophetic significance talked about even millennia ago in the Bible.
Against all odds, light fighting back the darkness, hope conquering fear. When the disciple Peter kept his eyes on Jesus, the lighthouse so to speak, he didn’t drown. It was only when he took his eyes off him and focused on the storm and waves around him, that he started to sink.
This was the message that spoke to me as I painted a dark sea almost enveloping the figure, but she stands strong and firm, her head above the water.
I wrote this small poem when I painted this.
I choose to keep my eyes on the lighthouse
I choose to swim not sink
In the sea of fear and paranoia
Even if it’s against the current.
I choose to keep my head above the water
And I will make it to the other side.
